Introducing Biochar to our Impact Portfolio

June 2, 2025

At CNaught, we’re always working to ensure our carbon credit portfolios reflect the latest science, evolving standards, and our commitment to delivering meaningful climate impact. Today, we’re thrilled to announce the addition of a new biochar project to our portfolios that include technology-based removals: Planboo’s Farm Gai Kaisa in Namibia.

🌍 Spotlight: Farm Gai Kaisa Biochar Project

This innovative biochar project delivers two key climate benefits:

  • Permanently removing carbon by converting invasive bush into biochar
  • Restoring native savannah ecosystems degraded by overgrowth

To date, the project has permanently removed nearly 15,000 tonnes of CO₂, with a goal of removing 329,000 tonnes by 2030. The resulting biochar is shared with local farmers to enhance soil fertility and increase crop yields, creating a win for both climate and community.

Biochar in general is one of the most promising types of technology-based carbon removal available now, representing 86% of all deliveries (as opposed to orders) in 2024 according to CDR.fyi. But not all biochar is created equal. For instance, a project can fail to demonstrate additionality if a facility was already producing biochar prior to the project consideration and certain methodologies do not adequately account for project emissions.

As with all of the projects we support, Farm Gai Kaisa underwent our rigorous 7-step due diligence process and we ensured that it is highly-rated by at least one independent third-party.

What This Means for You

With this addition, we’re able to double our allocation of technology-based removals in our standard Impact portfolio. This shift increases the amount of permanent carbon removals that your climate initiative supports.

And importantly, we’re keeping the price the same: $20 per tonne. You’re continuing to get a science-aligned portfolio, without any change in cost.

This update is part of our ongoing effort to offer high-integrity, high-impact portfolios aligned with your climate goals. Stop chasing specific project types or doing your own diligence. Leave it up to us to do the heavy lifting for you.
